It has been an interesting week! One adventure after another after another.

Last Thursday and Friday, we had a small group of guests in the house and a few inches of snow outside the house. Since JustBob was off both days, he asked a neighbor to come run the plow truck around the grounds just to make life a bit easier for our team to come and go, and for our guests when they left.

A somewhat larger group was here for the day Saturday, and shortly after they left, the snow returned. This time, it kept snowing until early Monday morning. By the time it was all said and done, there was at least another half-foot of snow on the ground. Luckily, our neighbor was available to return on Monday morning to help us out again, as JustBob was snowed in at home. The volunteer managed to cut a path through the snow so staff, residents and a guest could come and go. The rest of the snow clearing waited until Tuesday when JustBob returned, and that task took most of his day.

Monday was also the first part of out two-part Team Retreat. Everyone but JustBob was able to make it in, although Jain was debating whether she should try snowshoes or cross-country skis to get here while she waited to get plowed out. Part one of the retreat was mostly story-sharing so our presenter, Steven, could get to know us and vice versa, and for us to get to know each other a little better. Part two will be late in April. Hopefully, that day will be less adventurous.

Of course, because JustBob was gone for a long weekend, Murphy’s Law dictates that something major, and unplanned, should go wrong in his absence. This time, the compressor for the walk-in freezer decided it was time for a vacation. Starting Thursday, it began demanding attention by randomly tripping the circuit breaker. Close monitoring and some TLC got us through the weekend and into the early part of the week before it finally gave up the ghost on Wednesday. The refrigeration expert got it back up and running Thursday, so the crisis was averted for now.

More guests came Thursday, and more adventures. Kim, who had been home for a couple of days fighting a bug not named Covid, was not still able to come to work. So once again, a volunteer stepped up to help. Candy took care of fixing lunch for our guests and team and got us through the day.

Everyone’s life can be full of adventures, some we know about and can plan for like guests and snowstorms, and others that come up without warning like attention-seeking compressors and illness. We plan the best we can for the adventures we expect and hope for a little help from friends and neighbors when we need, especially when those unexpected adventures arrive.

For all of life’s little adventures, and for the planning, resources, help and grace that get us through them, we say Deo Gratias!
