After being patient and waiting our turn, the process of clearing our woods of dead and diseased trees, as well as thinning overcrowded areas and removing trees in danger of causing severe damage if they were to fall during a storm, began last Wednesday, the afternoon of our Team Retreat. Timing is everything, they say, but the sooner the loggers begin, the sooner they will be finished.

JustBob expects the process to take several weeks, but that depends somewhat on the cooperation of Brother Sun and Sister Rain. If Sister Rain can avoid visiting during the work-week and allow Brother Sun as many opportunities as possible to visit during the week, the work should proceed quickly.

Of course, that may not be the most welcome news for last week’s other beginning, the beginning of retreat season. Last weekend, we welcomed nearly 60 guests to St. Anthony’s, each one part of one of three groups here. It has been too long since we had so many guests at one time. Sister Rain was here off and on all weekend and kept the guests in the house most of the time.

As I said, last weekend was only the beginning, though. We will have one or more groups of guests coming every weekend in September, October and November right up to Thanksgiving week. That’s a lot of guests coming in and out of our doors in the next three months!

When there is much work to be done, we depend on our trusty volunteers to come through with many hands to make the work lighter. Once the logging is done, JustBob will be looking for some strong, willing hands to help clean up the woods. That project is scheduled for Saturday, October 8 from 9 am to 3 pm. There will be plenty of smaller branches that will need to be run through the wood chipper and larger branches that will need to be cut, split and stacked for firewood. Volunteers who are willing and able to help out in the woods are asked to contact JustBob at 715-443-2236, ext. 113.

With all the guests we are expecting, we could use many hands to help us take care of them. The Lord’s Ladies were here Monday for the first time in over two years, and there’s room for more volunteers to help out on Mondays. There at least one weekend where help will be needed for a quick turnover on the weekend as we have groups coming and going back-to-back-to-back. Volunteers to host guests on weekends and occasionally during the week, to help with housekeeping after groups leave, and to help prep food for the weekend or do dishes on the weekend would be a blessing. Again, many hands make light work and any help our volunteers offer would be most appreciated. If anyone is willing to give us a hand, please contact Jackie K. at 715-443-2236, ext. 116.

For the blessing of work and the blessing of many hands to make the work lighter, we say Deo Gratias!
